Nanny/Manny
A Nanny/Manny is an experienced, qualified child carer employed to look after children at the employer’s home. Trained Nannies provide care and educational development for children from birth to ten years. They can live in/live out, permanently or temporarily, and have complete sole charge of the children or share charge with the mother, father, grandparent, or sometimes another Nanny.
Nanny duties include taking responsibility for the safety and well-being of the children in her care, providing safe, stimulating, age-appropriate activities, completing Nursery duties such as children’s laundry, maintaining the tidiness of children’s rooms and preparing children’s meals. A Nanny is not responsible for general household tasks.
Salaries vary, depending on whether the Nanny is live-in or live-out, what qualifications/experience she holds if she’d have to use her car for work, etc. On-going rates for a live-out nanny are from £14 to £18 net per hour, and for a live-in nanny, from £450 to £750 net per week.
The employer must pay tax and NI on top of the net rate. Live-in nannies usually work from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Mondays to Fridays, and they’re supposed to babysit twice a week, included in their salary ( Monday to Thursday only). If you need babysitting on weekends, you must pay for it separately. The family (employer) provides full board and food.
Nanny Share
A Nanny Share is a nanny shared between two or more families, usually to spread the cost. Qualifications and duties are as above, although the Nanny’s hourly/weekly rate is usually slightly higher because she takes on the responsibility of more children/nursery duties than would apply to one family. Also, she would be dealing with two or more families, and she would usually work between two or more houses.
Housekeeper
Families usually employ a Housekeeper to manage the care of the home while their children are at school. Their duties may or may not include childcare and household duties during school hours. A family can employ them on a live-in or live-out basis, temporary or permanent.
Maternity Nanny
Maternity Nannies are employed temporarily to assist with newborn babies. They either live in and work seven days a week with a break, 12/24 hours a day, helping mum with all issues with the newborn or arrive in the evening and take charge of the baby during the night so the mother can rest. They usually have specific qualifications for newborn baby care or vast experience in this area.
In addition to caring for your baby, they may advise you on matters such as breastfeeding, getting your baby into a routine, baby equipment and weight gain patterns. On-going rates are from £18 to £25 net per hour for a 12-hour shift and from £220 to £320 for 24 hours with a 3 hours break on a self-employment basis.
Doulas
A Doula provides continuous emotional and practical support for mothers and couples through pregnancy, birth, and immediately postpartum, as well as flexible practical and emotional support postnatally for new mothers and families in their homes. Doulas are usually experienced women and mothers undertaking a doula preparation course. Doulas support families from all ethnic, religious, and social backgrounds, including couples and single parents, same-sex parents, low-income families and executives, students, lawyers, midwives and doctors, etc. Doulas spend time building relationships with the families they are supporting. They offer space and time for parents to discuss and reflect upon their situation, their needs, past experiences and options in childbirth to enable them to move towards a positive experience. Doulas are not there to take the place of the family or partner during birth unless parental choice, circumstances or cultural pressures mean that the mother’s partner can’t be with her during labour and birth. Doulas do not take a clinical role; they work alongside their client’s care providers, supporting clients in their own choices. The doula is led only by her client’s wishes and does not make specific recommendations, but might signpost to evidence-based resources and information.
Mother’s Help
A Mother’s Help is usually either unqualified with little experience or qualified with little nannying expertise (e.g. a nursery worker looking to break into nannying.) A Mother’s help usually works alongside the Mother or Father, providing childcare and assisting with other household duties. Mother’s help can be live-in or live-out and usually commands lower salaries than a nanny.
